“Krakow is a lucky city that during the Second World War it was not destroyed.
However, it was the place where the Second World War had its very bad aspects.
“We have to refer to Schindler,
who had the factory here and he saved thousands of Jewish lives during the Second World War.
It was the place where the Germans, when they're quickly leaving Krakow,
they didn't have enough time to destroy the city.
“So that's why we can until today enjoy
the real historical buildings with the real materials and real beauty of it.
We did a couple of nice projects in the center of historical Krakow,
which we had to deal with very carefully because it's a historical zone.
“Very often we had to negotiate
about which part of the building we should keep,
which part we could change,modify.
“This discussion sometimes is difficult, sometimes is inspiring.
Like for example, in case of Malopolska Garden of Arts.
We understood that some parts must remained to exemplify history,
to show that the history was on this place before,
and then add something new to it,
to show that the history is not stopping,
history is developing,
and to show what is our attitude to historical elements.
“While we examined all the buildings in the area, within the block,
and most of them are done with brick.
So we decided to design a new type of brick for our building.
It has two kinds of shape,
one is rectangular, one is triangular,
and each form has three colors,
so altogether, this elevation is composed of elements of six colors.
“We wanted to create a type of new building,
and put a kind of new style of life into the building,
to create a building which is rooted in history but free in form.
It was the year 2007,
when we entered the international competition for the congress hall.
“We spent a lot of energy and seven years of our work,
on completion of the building.
However, we are very satisfied with the result.
The building was recently awarded as the best convention center in Europe.
“For us it's quite important to create the free space here.
in which we can freely move, it's an organic space.
We can move upstairs, downstairs to observe the city.
People standing here are observing but at the same time they're being observed.
“I think an interesting feature of the space is the flying staircase.
I think it is nice to walk up and to see the Wawel Royal Castle through the window,
This staircase is a part of a play.
Each generation actually should add something personal to the history of architecture,
“So we think like that,
We don't want to destroy history,
we want to add something to it,
we want to create a dialogue.
